Open Blue Horizon

January 26, 2010- Moriarty, New Mexico PDF Print E-mail

As you can see, we are not in California, and are in rural New Mexico of all places. That's because our Ford diesel truck decided to start spitting all of it's coolant out of the exhaust. It's not a super duper huge deal, and it's at a shop getting fixed right now. Should be in California on Thursday, about 3 days after we had planned on getting there. Other than that, the trip has been pretty good and uneventful.

boat all ready to go

Boat all ready to go on my final cold/ rainy day in North Carolina. Some guys came over from the NASCAR shop next door and helped us put the mast back on top of the boat. We ended up leaving a day later than planned.

boat at gas station in Tennessee

Warrior's Wish at a gas station in Western Tennessee. The boat got a lot of attention at this gas station; some guys knew about Hope for the Warriors and had actually done some work with another wounded veteran related organization. Pretty neat.

near Texas New Mexico border

Very close to the Texas/ New Mexico border. Still going okay at this point.

broken down in Moriarty

Broken down in Moriarty, New Mexico. What happened to us is extremely common on Ford's 6.0 liter diesel. Basically, the passages in the oil cooler are too small (there was a recall and new oil coolers were put on many of the trucks) and when the oil cooler gets plugged up, it makes the exhaust gas recirculation cooler over heat and start dumping all of the truck's coolant into the exhaust. So, the truck starts overheating and also POURING white smoke (steam) out of the exhaust. Not good when you're trying to tow a boat across the country.

big pawprint

Really big paw print I saw when walking down Route 66. I have no idea what it's from, but I highly doubt it's a domesticated pet. Mountain lion or something?

We overnighted some parts form Tennessee, and a local Auto Shop is fixing the truck as I type this. With any luck, we'll be back on the road by tonight.

end

Bummer dude. I hope you get her going, and the rest of the trip goes well. Man, I worry about that rudder hanging down there while being towed!
